1977 Walter D. Koenig 10 Melanerpes formicivorus Black Oak Hastings Reservation 5 August ♂102 and ♀410 seen at the Arnold Spring this morning. 1 September ♀410 caught by Pam at the Arnold Spring. ♂102 seen there also. 18 September ♀ or ♂? / Black #320 (most likely) seen at the spring by Pam this evening. 24 September 1400. In keeping with the fact that Black Oak acorns mature earlier than the others and that this group stores mostly Black Oak acorns, these birds are way ahead of everybody else in storage, having virtually filled their holes already! Central area: 1074 Side area: 432 } 1446. Some are definitely old. 30 September 1440. 2 nets up. 1600. Bird caught, processed, and released: ♀320; caught in 15' net in main (central) storage area. 2 October 1130. Nets up again 1345. ? m / wh #410 seen 1510. Caught one that I wanted! ♂ub → ♂421 (in the 30' net up in the side area). Bird was molting 2° and is thus definitely an adult. Until evidence is gathered to the contrary (and of course there is considerable doubt about all this since I have some reason to suspect that the ♀ here had been replaced) I assume her to be "the" ub ♀ here (now numbered as 552). 3 October 910. Watching. 930. ♂♂/wh/yel #102 in perch area toward Branca. 950. Bad news: ♂ub. Looks like the bird I caught yesterday may not have been the one I wanted after all. 952. ♂ (♂-type still) wh-red/wh #410.
