1977 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Black Oak (19 June) 1141. Some calling in forest towards Bianca. 1220. Several birds still back in the forest. Obviously must have sap trees back there. 1245. Seeing anything back there is a real challenge, but I have now gotten fair-poor looks at 8wn/4e#102, 8ub, and a 8ub. Also a 8 did go into the nest hole, so hopefully the nest isn't gone yet. Though there has been a very occasional flycatcher flight, all these birds are clearly sap-sucking back here in the forest. [Re the 8ub, you'll have to decide sometime or other whether to make her a new one or the same unbanded one as always. Maybe the egg measurements will help?] 1300. Leaving. Can't say as I'm especially optimistic about the nest; clearly insects are really on the shorts up here. (I'm not sure why no one seems to be paying any attention to their acorns, however). 1303. May have been 2 8's together in the small sap limb. That's pretty much what I need to find out, but the nest sure isn't helping me much so I may as well move around and come back as soon as possible. 22 June 645. Watching from hide. 715. The 3 8's up in the perch area in the forest towards LA2: 8ub, 8 0r/DB-win(n)#321, 8 8el/wh#102. 720. There are for sure 6 birds together in the perch area now; there's no obvious intruder, and best I can tell, which was pretty well but not 100%, 4 are 8's. 725. 1 of the 8's seen: 4 8 M/wh-Red #367 (one of those I banded).
