Melanerpes formicivorus
Black Oak
Hastings Reservation
(13 April)
In any case, activity here is only intermittently intense,
and chasing even among adjacent ♀♀ is relatively rare.
1150. ♂#102 here after all. Still lots of ub♀♀,
but the continued presence of all 3♂♂ at least makes
everything somewhat clearer.
1400. Counted stores: Central area: 1353
Side: 145 / 1498
Only one big burst of birds/fighting/activity was
seen, down in the far corner by Bianca. I was
going to put up a net, but it was way too windy.
17 April
910. There is 1-2 ub♂♀ up in the forest perch area. No
calling going on here at the moment.
915. 2♂♀ in forest area; calling now in side storage area.
There are ≥3 more birds there.
955. An ub♂ and ♂102 in forest perch area together.
1000. ♀ Red-Lg/M #320 is here, up with ♂102 and ♀ub.
1010. 3ub eating acorn in side area.
1020. A banded ♂ karit-cutting over toward Bianca is
♂or/♀
Left WS, apparently #217 from Bianca. There are now
other birds over there.
1040. Most of the birds are now over where ♂217 had been,
perhaps clearing up this minor border dispute.
1042. An ub♂ and ♀ at the Black Oak roost hole down the N slope.
1050. Now 4 birds at the hole: ♂102, who went in, ♂ub, and
2 ub♀♀.
1055. 2ub♀♀ and an ub♂ at the hole now.
1100. Leaving. There are, apparently, 6 birds here:
