Melanerpes formicivorus
Black Oak Hastings Reservation.
25 January 1200. Counted stores: Central area: 1466
Side area: 452 } 1918
Also removed a sample of 55 acorns from the central area.
I was able to pick out discernable traces of color on 7
acorns in the one dead limb that were marked last year.
Some of these were quite faint, however.
11 March 930. Counted stores: Central area 1384 }
Side area: 321 } 1705
13 April 1030. There is a fair amount of apparently mostly intragroup
activity here, especially in the side area. Involves 4-5 birds.
1040. 1030r/DB-3821.
1042. Some Carrick displaying, lots of wakas, but I don't
see any chasing. A ♀ is paying attention to the hole over
there covered by poison oak.
1045 Apparently some sort of interaction is taking place; there
is possibly one intruder. At least 1 ub ♀ is here.
1050. The ♀ at the roost hole is @♀ub.
1052. There definitely seem to be a few more ub birds
here than there should be; also I finally saw a couple chases.
1055. There in fact seem to be 3-4 ub birds here.
1130. The story as far as I can tell is this: there are
possibly only 2 38, 3821 and an ub ♂. There are 4 or 5
♀, however, none of whom are banded (best I can
tell. Some chasing, Carricking, etc., is taking place, but
if there has been a complete change of ♀♀ and these are
replacements the brunt of the revolution probably occurred
several days ago.
