Melanerpes fomicivorus
Arf, too
Hastings Reservation
25 January
Took a sample of 30 acorns out of their granary; their
stores are not really abundant but they probably have 700-
900 or so. Saw one unbanded ♂ in the vicinity.
19 May
1800. 3 birds were in or flying to a Blue Oak along the path
leating in to the granaries; I looked around and eventually
noted the blackish/reddish grarled bark at the top characteristic
of a heavily-used sap limb. Otherwise, there is one nice-looking
hole in the tall tree by the dead granaries and there are stores
remaining.
21 May
1745. Heard some calling hear but didn't see anyone. Even checked
the possible nest tree across West Ravine, but nobody was there.
22 June
915. A bird was calling near the purported roost tree across
West Ravine; I walked over there but found nothing more enlightening.

There are enough stores here to show that the group clearly
still exists, but not enough to convince me that they're
doing especially well.
