Melanerpes formicivorus
School Hill Hastings Reservation
(10 July) 1440. 9m, (191 or 93) here, but hell if I could figure out which she was.
1500. Opened the next hole, finding it empty of any clues concerning the whereabouts or fate of any nestlings. Below the tree I did find 2 sheathed 1°, however, which looked like they could very well have come from a dissolving body of a colony AW.
Counted stores: Tree 1 : 232
Tree 2 : 453 } 685
11 July
740. And again.
800. 9Qub here with 8256 and 1 juv. whose bands I couldn't see
825. 3°juv/Red 191.
835. 4°j 402 immediately behind 8DBW#86.
912. j402 in tree! again (alone).
920. Just had a rare dominance interaction between 8886 and 256:
Both were together with 911 atop tree 1; 8256 began emitting the "begging-subordinate" calls common in older birds. 8256
proceeded to hop on top of 8256 and peck at him several times before hopping off. ♀R& 4B^wn#191 now here preening.
925. j402 here again.
940. Leaving. This is enough to convince me to Purge j400 and 401. (Also to move back 911 and 888). I'm bothered a little about j399, but I do believe I saw him. j402 is the only baby hanging around here regularly, however.
17 July
830. Several of these birds down at Pump (getting water?)
See 1500 for explanation of changes made in group composition here. Birds affected or discussed at length are 888, 914, 915, 296, 297, 298, 886, 8256, 911, and 913.
