1977 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus School Hill Hastings Reservation (29 May) 1130. 8256 fed; 1145. 8256 and 886 fed. 1220. 8256 has fed 3 more times, finally Rub came, but I blew it. Maybe tomorrow - I came pretty close. 1-2 first-year birds were still begging constantly over in the storage area the entire time I was here, by the way. 30 May 915. Back again for probably my last crack at the ♀ this way. 930. Several birds here busy hawking. 8256 has an incredible billful of hawked insects. ♀ here too! 947. 8256 fed. 950. 8256 again. 952. And again 8256. 954. Another full billful. He must be storing these insects somewhere. 1005. 886 here hawking also. 1100. I don't entirely understand, but despite the persistent presence of these 3 girls (none of the first-year birds were seen or heard today) only 8256 seems to be feeding: by 1100 he had made 15 more feeding trips, for a total of 19, all by him (plus at least 1 that I missed). I'm afraid I'll have to try ambushing the ♀ at the roost instead. 2 June All 3 School Hill 1st-yr birds down at 1800 (see 1800 notes). 7 June 1800. Banded, etc. the 4 babies as #399, 400, 401, and 402. 8 June 1800. Bird in nest hole; none in any other holes. 14 June 1700. Counted stores: Tree 1 241 Tree 2: 2881 622 } 863. One nearly-fledged baby was nearly falling out of the hole while I was here. 25 June 1830. Walked through, but all holes were empty and nobody was in evidence. 9 July 1100. Watching from hide.
