1977 Walker D. Koenig Melanerpes fomicivorus School Hill Hastings Reservation (25 April) hole briefly, then returned; several minutes later the ♀ flew to the '76 nest hole, did not go inside either, however. Then all flew down somewhat from the storage area. This could be the group; though we'll have to wait awhile to find out for sure, especially in regards to the 1st-yr. ♂. Flash! See School Hill West notes for news on ♀♀ 191! 1 May Walked up right at dusk, finding that several birds roosted in the hole down along the path (where the wire still is) but that ♂ a ♂ was in the '76 nest hole. 2 May 930. Nobody in any holes. I opened the '76 hole anyway, though, and found several eggs (the hole has been deepened to the extent that I couldn't reach the bottom). 1600. Again nobody in the nest hole, but there are 5 eggs there, all relatively fresh, and all rather warmish. 4 May 830. Bird flushed from the nest, where I saw 5 eggs still (via my mirror widget) 5 May Purge: ♀♀ 191 and 193. Last seen here at School Hill on 22 February, found at S.Hill West on 25 April → Moved to unwatched group about 24 March ± 1 month. 6 May 2005. Bird in hole at dusk. 8 May Bird flushed from hole despite the rain today. 11 May 2005. Bird in hole. 14 May 1820. Bird flushed from hole, leaving some relatively noisy nestlings behind. 18 May 1150. Watching. Nestlings but no adults in hole. 1200, ♂♂ #2576 fed along with a ♀.
