1977 (Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Hastings Reservation, Monterey Co, Calif (25 November) least appearing as such) in Robertson Canyon in the same general area where the 2 birds (inc.8323 from MacRoberts) were last winter. It even appeared as though there was an old tree on the edge of PO Hill where there might be some storage facilities, but I couldn't be sure. This is not near where I saw the group on the way up. 25 December Walked up to the Arnold Cabin. Along the way we discovered a "new" granary, which has acorns stored in it! It is just next to the road past the old, unused ARF tree in an area where I have indeed seen birds (always assumed to be ARF, too birds before). The tree is an old Valley Oak; most of the stores are in the top (dead) limb.
