1977 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus School Hill Hastings Reservation. 4 January ♀♀ 191 and 193 at 1800 probably trying to move in. See 1800 notes. 9 January Walked up; nobody seen at "S.Hill B"; but several birds were over in the main School Hill area. 27 January 1530. Counted stores: tree 2 1520 tree 1: 465 Also took a sample of 50 acorns from the granary (I already have some from a fallen limb at the lab.) 3 February ♂86 caught at 1500. 22 February 1200. In hide watching. 1255. ♂DBW#86 finally here in storage area. Others down below in forest, inc. ♀M, (either 191 or 193). BOS.♀?♀ub here now. 1308. ♀M/LPnb#193. 1310. A Cooper Hawk came winging by causing momentary consternation; ♀193 saw it and loudly karin-culled several seconds before its arrival. 1317. ♂♂ WN-DB/144#256. ♀♀ LB/LP#296. 1430. Leaving. Birds still loosely in the vicinity, but only occasionally out where I can get a decent look at them. See 1500 group notes for some School Hill birds seen there - (most of the group was apparently down visiting ♂♂194 and 195. Seen were ♂256, ♀191, ♂296, and ♂294; 1-2 others were also probably there. This leaves the existence of only ♂298 still open to some question). (♂86 also there). 7 March More birds (inc. ♂298) at 1500. See 1500 notes. 10 March 1630. Several birds scattered around here, inc. one who flushed to the S.Hill "B" tree (who was banded). Counted stores: Tree 2: 1312 Tree 1: 366
