Melanerpes formicivorus
Road 3
Hastings Reservation
(16 May)
955 (8'184). 1000. End. Total of 20 feedings in 1 hour; not at all
bad, especially given the weather. Clearly acorns are
helping out a great deal here, but I'll still have to profess
astonishment at the apparent amount of insects they seem
to be getting. Perhaps things really aren't so bad, at least
as long as it's not too windy or raining.
18 May
2015. Could get nothing (no adult nor baby calls) out
of the nest. It was late and all, but I sure hope nothing has
gone wrong here.
19 May
1415. Nest opened: 3 babies, all pretty comparable in weight.
Eyes open a slit only, papillae just breaking skin on wing.
Traditional tarsometatarsus was measured.
All 3 babies had what seemed to be an unusual number of
lice running around on them.
1 June
1700. Banded the 3 babies, who all seem in good shape,
as #382, 383, and 384.
8 June
1830. ≤3 birds in the high hole in the nest tree apparently
roosting on this foggy evening.
13 June
900. Counted stores: Valley Oak : 331
Sync Nest tree: 452
I'm fairly sure I heard the babies off on the N side of the
road.
