1977 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Road 3 Hastings Reservation 13 January Took a sample of 65 or so acorns, mostly from a small dead limb I felled in the process of getting up. Saw ♂#68 and ♀#269 when I arrived, working stores. 14 January Counted stores: Valley Oak: 1043 Sycamore: 947 15 February 1030. Watching. ♂ or /♀ #68 here. ♂ /♀#184 in perch sycamore. 1050. ♂/♀#269 karit-cutting over across the creek over something: 1100. ♂DS/4K-LB #265 now up in the sycamore. C'est tout. 8 March 1230. Counted stores: Valley Oak: 623 Sycamore: 838 As far as I could tell the birds were up the side of Poison Oak Hill, probably sapsucking in some Live Oaks. 6 April 930. All 4 birds here hawking; all 4 seen well to very well; est ♂184, ♂#68, and ♀#265. Counted stores: Valley Oak: 553 Sycamore: 730 Stores have not really diminished noticeably since March. 18 April 1315. All quiet here; no birds seen in/out of holes. 21 April 1615. 3 birds near/in the new low hole in the sycamore; it could be it. 22 April 1700. None at the hole today. 24 April 1230. A bird at the hole. 26 April 1530-1600. 2 birds flushed from the nest tree when I arrived but none returned by 1600. 1605. ♂♂ D8-WN(W) /♀ #269 and ♀♂ WN-BLK/#184 now here.
