Melanerpes formicivorus
Finch
Hastings Reservation.
6 April
855. Lots of calling all over here, even more so
than at Road I right now. ♂♀/DB-wn #232 seen
from the road.
907. ♂ Tan-Red/Tan-Red #282 and ♂♂ DB #278 in perch tree.
910. A Girl: M/LP (?) Wha? Don't know who this was.
912. ♂♂ Arm-Blk/Arm-Blk #63 in sycamore storage tree.
915. ♀ LA-Blk/LA- ? #280
922 ♂♂ Red-Yel/Blk-LA #67 hawking here. Though there
is still a fair amount of activity, I haven't seen a
chase yet; perhaps the excess calling was merely been
generated as a byproduct of the activity at Road I over
the last day.
926. ♂♂ ? Pink/wn probably #66.
930. Leaving to count stores.
Counted stores: Main tree: 1059 )
Sycamore: 228 / 1287
Still some activity (1030), but relatively quiet.
18 April
1230. Lots of activity here centered at the moment
around the sycamore storage tree.
1300. Here's the scoop, best I can tell: this is a revolution
similar to that at Road I a couple weeks ago--that is,
no one is gone, so these are birds apparently just plain trying
to bully their way into the group. All 8 known group
members were seen well (#63,232, 66,67,549,278,280,282);
#280 was over by herself in the Valley Oak granary most of the time,
but all others were along the creek from the sycamore up
a few trees battling it out with the intruders.
