1977 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Road ! Hastings Reservation. (6 April) 900. There is a fair amount of calling and activity here, but relatively little chasing. 902. ⚫♀ La-or #69. That's everybody except the unbanded ♂. Counted stores: Main tree: 744 } Sycamore: 417 } 1238 Misc.: 77 } Several chases and lots of calling continues, though still not nearly as vigorously as yesterday. 7 April 915. There is still unusually lot of activity both here and at Finch, but things are much calmer here than during the prior 2 days. 18 April 1230. In contrast to Finch, things are quiet here. Nobody seen in any holes. 22 April Several birds around the sycamore nest tree, but none apparently "in" a hole as yet. 27 April 1900. A bird in the hole just above the '76 nest hole. 1 May 1005. A bird near the same hole as on the 27th again. 3 May 1000. I gave in to curiosity and cut open the hole with a [illegible] T-4 bacteriophage ⚫ sawing effort. There was nothing inside, however. In another couple days if something doesn't get here I'm going to have to break town and watch. 4 May 1845. Bird in the hole I opened yesterday. I should perchance check the wretched thing tomorrow again. 5 May 1500. With a bird in the hole again, I went up and looked, but there was still nothing in it. 1630.
