1977 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Road 1 (5 April) Hastings Reservation. 940. Birds are mostly hawking still (and slightly over- heating doing so). The residents, during a rare free moment, do peek briefly at an acorn or two. 952. There are 2 ub88 and a 9 more or less peacefully sitting/ hawking in the tree just up from the hide. It's hard to tell, but I think they're getting flying ants (and lots of them, too!) 1000. If 9772 and/or 293 are still here (which I doubt), neither are hanging out at all around the granary, which I've been watching pretty steadily. I'm now going to check some of the activity down around the next tree before returning to get some nets. 1015. Down in the field next to (north of) the next tree, about 8 birds are busy chasing each other. After 10 minutes I saw one ub8, but everyone else I saw was an unringed. This dispute is more or less centered around one of the (dead?) sycamores by the creek with a roost hole and a few storage holes (empty) in it. 1145. I now have 2-15' nets in the main granary and 1-30' net over in the sycamores described at 1015 above. Activity is still strong in all areas. 1200. 2 8 caught by the creek: #351 and 352. 1230. 8ub caught by creek: #353 1400. 8ub (#354) and 8180 caught by granary. Things seem slower now; activity is tapering off. 1430. Another 8ub #355 by the creek. 1510. With the nets finally empty, I'm back in the hide again
