Melanerpes formicivorus
Road L
Hastings Reservation.
(5 April!)
④♂DBRW#222 in granary ⑤♀R-w-R/LP#180 in granary;
also a (mother?) ♀ub. ⑥♀Red/DB-WN(w)#295.
⑦♂Red/DB-WL#294
905. ♂ub more or less with everybody else in the granary.
The ♀♀ are working double time chasing other birds, most of
whom seem to be other (ub) ♀♀.
Whenever birds are together long enough to be seen in the
granary they are all group members.
⑧♂PRW#183.
Some serious chasing is taking place involving St birds
at a time. Lots of activity in scattered pockets all over
involving 20 or more birds.
915. Up above the granary 22 birds are hawking.
inc. ⑨♀LARW w/ Purple (?!) Hame-DB/M #339 (caughtat)
and ⑩♂ub plus 2 or more ub ♀♀
⑪♀Or-Lg/Da #69 in granary.
925. ♀339 is doing her share by chasing other ♀♀ out of
"her" tree up above the granary.
930. Again, one of the ub♂ is with the others in the granary
and will be assumed to be the resident. I have not quite so
much reason to be sure of the ♂, but one ub♂ was just in the
granary.
As at 1500"May"75, there are little "foci" of activity
with birds "defending" each "tree" and chasing out others.
In this case, the residents are in firm control of the granary.
935. This time I believe the ♂, as he was sitting with 3 others,
⑫2 of whom then went off to chase somebody else.
