1977 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes forficivorus Warp 5 Hastings Reservation. 5 May 1615. A bird flushed out of the little granary here as I approached; looking carefully, I found that the big limb that used to have the nice roost hole in it has fallen, but that there's a new hole in the tree which may very well be it. There are still stores here as well, by the way. 6 May 1230. Carved up with the ladder and checked the new hole, which is only a couple inches deep and not at all suitable for nesting. 6 June 1210. Walked up, not seeing anybody. Amazingly enough there are still a few acorns stored here, though. Watching. 1220. 2 birds greeted each other uphill from where I was sitting. I proceeded to walk around, but didn't find any promising holes. The group certainly still exists, at least. 1315. I heard a few more birds in the area at 2 times, but this area is quite difficult to work, or even to know where to begin in. Unless I stumble on the nest by sheer accident I suspect I'm just as well off lumping this group in with the essentially unfollowable ARF, too group.
