Melanerpes formicivorus
Gate
Hastings Reservation
6 April
1100. Counted stores: Gate tree: O
Weatetree: 358
358
♂ 238 was in the top of the Gate tree when I arrived, and
a ♀ was inside the hole in the Weate tree while I was
counting the acorns there.
21 April
1600. Bird in a hole in the Live Oak ! Maybe they'll do it
there-
22 April
1500. ♀ in same hole again; several other birds in the area.
Hole was checked (with the "scope") and I'm fairly sure I
would have seen a egg if there'd been one - but I didn't.
Afterwards I checked the other holes and noone was in
them, so there is still hope-
23 April
1400. Lots of birds here but noone in any holes.
24 April
1300. There was a bird in the hole in Westgate tree and a ♂ in the
hole in the Live Oak.
1915. Nobody in any holes.
25 April
1230. Nobody in holes.
26 April
1300. Bird in the hole in Westgate tree, not in Live Oak. Boo.
27 April
1905. Nobody in holes'; several birds around the field by the
Live Oak.
30 April
1130. Watched while 4-5 of these birds harassed a Crow
who had landed in the Westgate tree near where the '75
nest hole (and probably this year's also) is. The birds mobbed
it and definitely flew at it numerous times, mostly
giving the kararar - part of the karait-cut while they
dive-bombed the bird, who eventually flew out of the
area entirely.
