1977 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Lower Haystack Hastings Reservation (7 March) 1600. The birds, meanwhile, were nowhere to be seen, though I did here a few calls down below the '75 nest tree area. 4 April 8307 at 1500; see 1500 notes. 1430. Trying to find somebody here; I eventually found an un-wingstreamered & (?) on the knoll by the fence, then soon after there were 2+ birds up in the saddle area, inc. 3? or RW #307, who has come back up from 1500 where he was seen this morning. 1440. 8RRRW#236 now in '75 nest tree. Counted stores: 3488 (main tree). 1510. 8236 and ♀ LP/M #1970 sitting together just down from the '75 nest tree. 21 April 1200. Some light tapping in the main granary yielding a bird who had apparently been refurbishing the '76 nest hole; with luck, this hole will again be the place. The bird flushed over to the old sap area, where there were several other birds sitting. 30 April 1710. Heard some calls over by the '75 nest area, but otherwise didn't see anybody here. 4 May 1130. Bird in '76 nest hole. No doubt that's the one. 1700. Opened the hole to find 5 eggs, several quite opaque. 12 May 1015. Walking over to the hole, there wasn't an adult inside, but rasps heard from inside confirmed that hatching had occurred and that somebody was still alive. I didn't go up nor did I stay to count acorns (primarily because of the weather) but there are clearly many, many acorns still remaining here.
