1977 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus 10 1800 (14 June) 1112. Bird hawking from '74 nest tree up on side of School Hill. 1123. 8OrLW#334 in Main tree. 1128. 8334 eating acorn in storage limb; joined by 9LW#260. 1132. 9 flew off to greet a 3rd bird (apparently), while 8334 is working stores in the storage limb. Apparently the School Hill 1st-yr birds are just up from the nest- tree and in the half of the territory by 1500 - have they effectively split this place? (I've only seen 828 today, but heard ~3 birds up there). 15 June 1200. In hide. 9DBRW#348 sitting atop nest tree. Otherwise no sounds at the moment. 1215. 9Qum/DB#260 to Main tree from forest next door. 1220. Joined by 8OrLW#334. 1230. The third bird found: 8 preening casually in main tree; as expected: 8M/4P-DB#347. There's still some miscellaneous action on the outskirts of this territory (some Garrickling, etc.), plus the confusion generated by the "1500" birds being over here, but I feel confident about claiming the 1800 group as presently containing 9260 and the 238, who have replaced dear old 843. [illegible] 1250. 8334 checking stores in the storage limb; 9 nearby. 3rd bird heard calling in forest. No sign of anybody in/near nest tree. 1300. That will do for now. 16 June Purge: 843. Last seen 20 May 1977, following their nest failure. Gone by 2 June, when the revolution was noted → Disappeared about 31 May 1977 Add 88334 and 347, moved to 1800 as Adults 31 May.
