Melanerpes formicivorus
1500 Hastings Reservation
25April 1930. While emptying the Malaise Trap here, one bird flushed
out of the hole in tree 1 and at least a 2nd was inside
looking out at me.
27April 920. A bird preening in LSS is ?Blue/whom; certainly looked
like #195, but I couldn't see his R leg to tell him for sure
from #296.
930. ?DBRW#348 here in LSS.
1000. Leaving. Things are blissfully slow here, in any case.
4 May 1100. ≥2 birds here: a ♂ and ?DBRW#348 seen in tree 3. I'm
almost ready to entertain the notion that these birds may attempt
to breed.
5 May 2015. Scared 1-2 birds out of the hole in tree 1. It
may be about time to figure out who lives here and who
doesn't, and what the story is on the School Hill 1st-year
birds.
9 May 1515-1525. 1 bird seen briefly across the road by tree 5;
otherwise nobody here.
14 May 1635. 1♂ here up in tree 3, not looking especially settled. Nobody
else seen at all. After briefly entertaining the notion of a nest
here (see 4 May) I'm now entertaining the notion that there's no
longer even a group here.
16 May 1245. Watching.
1300. ♂♂/♀#296 in tree 3.
1315. ♂296 finally flew off. Nobody else here. Going to walk around briefly.
1325. Now ?DBRW#348 and a ♂ in tree 3.
1332. 3 birds here now, #348 and 2♂♂, inc. ♂M/Or-#88.
