1977 Walter D. Kornig Melanerpes formicivorus Pump (30 October) tried to bring the net down. Rats. 6 November 920. 1ub³ and 1ub♀ here as I came by. There are stores in the granary!!! Far out! 928. Momentary alarm as an Accipiter comes by. There are 164 acorns stored in the Willow Granary! I didn't see any in the Valley Oak, however (but I didn't climb up, either). 1445. Net up There are 15 or so acorns stored in the Valley Oak as well. 1700. Caught an unbanded ♀ - #429. She was held overnight. From my notes, it would appear that the making of a group have been here as early as mid-July, but that real solid residency and exclusivity by these birds (i.e. banded birds from School Hill/1500 no longer seen regularly) did not seem to set in until late August or early September. The actual membership here is only tentative pending some more watching and carding. 12 November 815. Net up. 1115. Caught a ♂ - #430. Not molting - could be 1st year?? Lots of stores here!! 1700. Caught another one - #432. 13 November 1100. Watching 1113. (1)♀ or/DB #429 landed in granary. 1122. (2)♀ DA/LB #432 preening in willow next to granary. 135. (3)♂ ? - probably #430 preening in live willow, then on telephone pole. There could still be 4th bird, but it looks as though all 3 of the birds
