1977 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes fomcicivorus Pump Hastings Reservation (21 September) 1010. Nobody here now. It's not clear that there is a "group" here at last, but it certainly seems possible that there is the beginnings of one! 22 September 1500. Still several birds here - ≥3. 1720. Net up 1315. Caught one - [illegible] #420. At least 2 others here. 1600. No further catch. 7 October No sign of any birds or stores in passing at 1745 8 October 1-2 birds here at 1750. 1756. 3ub landed in the VO storage limb, 3ia-da/m #298 in the willow, 1759. 3298 just left. 1800. 10 October 955. 1 banded bird sitting on storage limb in the Valley Oak. A 2nd, in the willows, flushed up to the Buckeye woodland on Blonquist's. 15 October 1315 ≥3 birds here, flushing to the large VO at the Blonquist pond. 1 ub bird, also one that looked like 3ia-da/m #402, but definitely 3 ia-da/or #297 from 1500. Some chasing. I climbed up to the storage area in the Valley Oak to check, and found some indication of acorns having been eaten in the storage limb (having been used as an anvil) but so sign of any real acorn storage as yet. 16 October 1500. 2 birds flushed from the area when I walked by. Why don't they store some? 1750. 1 bird sitting in the Willow granary. 25 October 900. Once again, there are at least 2 birds in the area. (There are birds here regularly - why don't they store?) 907. 23 birds now in area, inc. 3ub.
