1977 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes fomicius 32 (2 August) 701. An adult Sharpie came by, not particularly interested, because otherwise he could have had a Wilper for sure - instead he merely landed in front of the barn and sent everyone scrambling off towards the knoll. 709. 4-5 birds, mostly adults w/o wingstreamers, just returned; some chasing by the barn now. Several of the intruders are banded 83 - there's still no obvious glut of 88. H.B. Now quiet - 8322 behind, 8364 in front of barn. No intruders (or even babies) obvious. 723. (5) 8:08-10pm #261 plus an unbanded 8 in front of the barn. 730. Somebody appeared with a small acorn. Still 3-5 intruders, most or all 83 here, invoking occasional chases, but not any constant, high amount of activity (I haven't even heard a Garrick this morning yet). The light isn't real good, so I've been unable to figure out who any of the intruders are - but it's clear that the resident 88 are the ones doing much of the chasing. 733. (4) jDBLW #414. (5) jwHLW #415 also. Juvs do not seem to be doing any chasing. 740. Quiet. Leaving. No 88 yet. But why all the 88 here? 1350. 83 261, 322 in front of barn, some action (chasing) still going on- 1353. jLB #416 over on the knoll. 1403. 8ub at the barn now. Walking a lot, but nobody else seems to be here. 1407. Residents came over from the knoll - 8322 displaced the 8 several times.
