1977 Walter D. Koenig 21 Melanerpes formicivorus (23 June) fear that I was dozon watching the sycamore (looking for 8364, among other things) and saw nothing whatsoever roost there. 24 June 755. 8 yel #364 behind barn; then flew to front to greet some bird(s) there. Good - he's definitely here after all, and all's well. 1912. watching / 1913. 9/16 fed. 1915. 8/322 at lip; flew off at 1930 w/o feeding. 1940. 9/16 (removed fecal sac) / 1944. 9/16 (stayed 3 min). 1948. 8322. / 1951. 9/16. 2000. 8261 (fed insects) / 2002. 8261 (again 2003. 8322 (" ") / 2003. S. 8261 2007. 8261. / 2010. 8261 (1 min) 2012. 9/16 (removed fecal sac) / 2025. 8261. 2033. 8261. After all this I fear that I gotched getting the identity of the bird roosting in the hole: it was definitely either 8261 or 8322, definitely only 1 of them, and he came at 2054, by which time it was dark enough that I really could not be certain which he was. Otherwise, at least 1 bird roosted in the big Valley Oak here also. 25 June 95D. Measured the kits. Developmentally, the most developed (DB-LP) has eyes which are closed, but can be pulled open a bit with my fingers; toes are dark, the top mandian ridge of the bill is darkening also, while the lower mandible, remainder of upper mandible, tarsi and legs are pink. The upper mandible is just barely shorter (<1mm) than the lower. The papillae on the feather tail are just barely sticking thru the skin (look like short (2mm) spines)
