1977 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Hastings Reservation (22 June) 1618. ♀16 fed, left after 20 sec. 1619. ♂RR#322 came w/ big gillful of insects; left at 1620. 1627. ♀16. Left 1629. 1630. ♀16 again (with more food even!) left just after 8'26 I arrived. 1631. ♂RR 261 came. Left 1636. 1707. ♀16. Left after 15 sec. 1713. ♂261. Left " " " 1725. ♂261. Stayed only briefly. 1727. ♀16. Stayed 30 seconds. 1730. Leaving. Again I made out no acorns being fed. 23 June 1000. Again the nest was unattended as I came to measure the babies, all 4 of whom are still kicking. Developmentally, their eyes are still closed, their feet, tarsi, and bills are still pink, their claws are just darkening, and the feather papillae are distinct rods that have not yet coalesced on their wings, back, shoulders, and top of head. They still rasp and squeal regularly, and their egg tooth is still evident. 1620. Watching nest. (Times in nest are estimates only). 1627. ♂261 (15 sec., removed fecal sac). 1633. ♀16.
