Melanerpes formicivorus
Hastings Reservation, Monterey Co., Calif.
(18 March) sap and insects (I saw no foraging while I watched).
This is really neat! See the back of p. 2 for a map.
19 March 1140. On my way up to School Hill from Red House I am greeted
by an ub o' alongside the knoll just across the old road from
Red House. He seemed to be alone. (See map on back).
22 March Noted 2 birds up Robertson Canyon in the same area
where 323 was identified on 18 March. They were together
in a Sycamore.
[illegible]
April Emplois the net at 7 am.
7 April 1100. While up at Lambert's, I could hear something big
(revolution) going on nearby. I walked over to the scene, which
was the old Dead Valley Dale just South of Lambert, which
I will call "Near Lambert." Indeed, a revolution was in
full progress, with 20+ birds involved, who were about
95% ♀ (I finally saw 1 ♂ after 10 minutes). None were banded.
I set up
a net, which was not placed very well, but did catch 2 ♀♀
(356 and 357) by 1200.
1215. A real-looking copulation took place: ♂ on ♀, low in the
tree!
Conditions being what they are, I'm going to take down
the net and return with my camera.
The ♂ is doing more than his share of chasing (a resident)
