1977 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus 24 May 1430. Checked holes on S side; found a Flicker in the large Valley Oak hole up the Canyon. Eventually found 2+ birds on the knoll. Some interest in/around the '75 nest tree. 1445. Birds now by the barn and in the sycamore across the road. All 4 eventually seen flying off over the road and disappearing. All 1500 I found at least 3 of them in the hole in the large Valley Oak up the canyon where the flicker had been! At that point I left. Clearly interest here is high but as yet rather undirected. At dusk all 4 were sitting very close together in the Valley Oak next to the roost sycamore; I think most of them roosted there, but I'm fairly sure I heard one go up the canyon...! 25 May 935. Had seen one bird in perch tree up canyon; all 4 now have flown to the knoll. Birds are cohesive—not in a tight pack, but still as a group, following one another all to the same general area. 944. Birds had been by L.Barn, 3 flew to Canyon (♂322 still on knoll). Birds later seen back by the barn; 1 bird also seen flying up the canyon again. Later in the day I did go up the tree and check the hole in the canyon area, but there is nothing in it as yet. 26 May 1015. At least 1 bird in vicinity of trees in the canyon but nobody in the holes. 1020. ♂16 plus a ♂ landed at the barn. ♂261 seen picking out what must have been an acorn bit from the locust behind
