1977 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus 6 Hastings Reservation 21 May 905. ≥3 birds in 5 locusts behind L.Barn. 915. Birds came to locusts in front of barn from Canyon. Noone in holes up Canyon, however (e.g. 4th bird not there). 8322 in locusts preening. 925. 2 birds still in locusts. 8364 here. 8261 seen, probing for acorns, now drilling at it. 9 here also. 7 lowest in tree, 8364 highest, other 2 in between. (All 4 here). 930. Maybe an intruder. Birds going now to knoll. 935. ≥3 birds in Blue Oak on knoll (not one with hole: 9 here and 8322, 8364); 8261 in Valley Oak along fence line. 940. 916 to 75 nest hole, then sitting on top of the limb; 8322 in same tree now. 945. ≥3 birds in Blue Oak with hole (not 75 nest tree). 922 here 950. Birds all in big perch tree now. 955. At least 9, 8322, 8261 here. 1000. Birds flew off, out further on knoll (no intruders here anymore). 1010. Birds found - ≥2 flushed from '75 VO storage tree. Flew to the dead limb in the tree with holes up along Co. road; 9 sitting on back side (where holes are, but not at any in particular), 8322 here also. 1015. Birds flushed going up Canyon - walked up, flushing 3 birds from the big Valley Oak, near the [illegible] hole. But noone in hole. Birds are obviously very interested in holes. 1020. Birds heard back in locusts as I'm returning. At dusk, all 4 birds roosted together in the down-hanging limb in the sycamore.
