1977 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus MacRoberts Hastings Reservation (20 December) acorns and at least 300 holes) has fallen for good. The limb was immediately appropriated and taken down to Pump for use as a storage limb there. 30 December Walked up here - cued by my inability to see the granary here from Arnold Road Flat yesterday - and discovered that indeed the entire tree has fallen! This is interesting indeed. Quite a few stores could be seen, many now right on the ground but some (at least- 100 or more) near the former top, 10 feet off the ground where the birds could presumably still use them. No birds were seen, as it happens, but my guess is that they will hang around up to the time when they deplete the acorns here, probably in a month or so. At that point, this territory will probably be abandoned for good.
