Melanerpes formicivorus
MacRoberts
(15 April)
1005. An u6 & Carrick several times nearby, then flew to the
granary, drummed once, wrinkled several times, and
generally acted pretty uppity. (an wrk grating into a
wake). Noone else did anything about it.(there isn't any-
one else here).
1010. Another bout much like earlier: 8 Carricles, finally flies
to granary. 8ub flies to granary. Then the 8 begins
walking, moves up tree to displace a 2nd 8 who
had landed near the 8. She chases the 8 off, 8 hawks
and gets an insect.
25 April
1645. Nobody here; even checked the '75 nest area.
12 May
1345. Nobody here.
26 May
1315. " "
4 July
940. " " . Place looks pretty thoroughly deserted.
28 August
1930. No sign of acorns or birds here yet.
21 September
1100. Just as I looked at one of the Blue Oaks up here, and saw
some acorns in the tree and said to myself "any year there are acorns
up here there ought to be birds living here" an ALV flushed from
the granary. Several minutes later both a 8 ant 8 landed
briefly and in quick succession atop the granary. Looks as
though a group may actually be reestablished here.
8 October
1620. A 8 landed in the granary here as I walked up. Several
acorns can be seen stored here.
1623. 8ub landed here briefly.
Counted 24 acorns here. Not a lot, but already more than the old
group managed to get last year. Clearly there is a group here!
Birds have clearly been interested in this area as far back
