Peromyscus californicus
#435
Hastings Reservation, Monterey Co., Calif
May 23 Vulva crusty. Vaginal smear: Mostly cornified cells, but poor smear
May 24 weight = 39.5 grams. Imperforate - "pin hole" present.
Vaginal smear: Only cornified cells seen; slide marginal.
May 27 weight = 39.5 grams. Appeared to be perforate. & found in small
hollow log placed in cage on 5-26. Given 1/2 apple.
Vaginal smear: Primarily Leucocytes present with some (c5%) cornified
epithelial cells. Also some nucleated epithelial cells present.
May 28 weight = 39.5 grams. Perforate. Both animals found in hollow log.
Vaginal smear: ~40% leucocytes, ~40% epithelial cells of a few cornified cells.
wt=39.8 grams. Perforate. Both animals in log. Vaginal smear collected: ~50% leucocytes
~50% cornified epithelial cells. Hopefully, She is going through an estrus. Added
handful of rolled oats
May 30 wt = 39.0 grams. Barely perforate. Vaginal smear collected: poor, but present as ~80% leucocytes
and 40% cornified epithelial cells, no nucleated epidermal cells present.
May 31 wt = 40.0 grams. Imperforate. Vaginal smear: poor -- mostly cornified cells but a
few epithelial cells are present.
June 1 wt = 40.0 grams. Imperforate. Vaginal smear: ~95% epithelial cells + 5%
leucocytes. Wrapping cotton around bothifice seems to aid in collection of sample,
June 2 wt = 39.5 grams. Imperforate. Vaginal smear: ~75% cornified cells + 25%
epithelial cells. Added 1/2 apple, some carrot pieces + some spinach greens,
June 3 wt = 40.0 grams. Imperforate. Vaginal smear: ~50% cornified + 50%
epithelial cells. Not many cells appeared on slide although the swab contained a
considerable amount of thick, whitish fluid present in vagina. Cleaned cage & this time
added some fresh grass, leaves and chemise. Both animals are definitely
spending time in the hollow log nest.
June 4 wt = 39.0 grams. Imperforate. Vaginal smear; similar to yesterday's,
both in quality smear and quantity of cells present. The female is becoming
very difficult to capture and I wonder if the trauma is affecting her
ability to reproduce. They are using the log nest, but it does make it
more difficult to capture the animals,
June 5 wt = 39.0 grams. Imperforate. Vaginal smear: ~95% cornified + 5%
epithelial cells. Given 1/4 apple, some green + carrot pieces.
June 6 wt = 39.0 grams. Imperforate. Vaginal smear: almost all cornified cells, but
again, not many cells total. Vagina still has milky secretion present.
June 7 wt = 39.5 grams. Imperforate. Vaginal smear: ~60% leucocytes, 35% cornified
cells + 5% epithelial cells. Smear quality very good. NO vaginal secretion evident.
June 11 wt = 40.5g. Imperforate.
June 15 wt = 43.0 g. Imperforate.
June 18 wt = 47.0 g. She either getting very fat or is pregnant!
June 21 wt = 47.0 g. "" Given fresh greens, apple, carrot (Going
three eats at amazing speed...)
June 23 wt = 50.0 g. Cleared cage today.
June 25 1630h
wt=51g. Pregnant - imperforate.
June 26 1230h
wt=51g.
