RIBBLE, D.O. 1988 Peromyscus californicus 29 Haettig, Natural History Reservation, Monterey Co., Calif July 7 #1379 ♀ imm, mullif, irg. 15.5 g. ear tagged. GRID MC @ st. 9,18. Ear tissue, blood and saliva still need to be collected. (see notes below) #1184 dusted GOLDEN BROWN at MC grid st. 8,17. July 8 #1200 dusted GREEN at MC GRID st. 9,7. #1343 dusted BLUEGREEN at RC drift fence st. E-10 (in). July 11 This am we caught ♀#1379 at st. 9,17 on MC covered with GOLDEN-BROWN powder; thus, she is offspring of ♀#1184. Also this AM on MC, cl flushed ♀#1184 (lump) with GOLDEN- BROWN at station 9,17; and ♀#1186(lump) with PURPLE powder at 10,10. This Pm on GRID RC we flushed ♀#1979 pregnant with RED powder at station 7,16. This PM we conducted a trial of sorts on the captive animals. Each female was dusted, released into a small plastic cage with cotton bedding for 1½h, and released into the enclosure. Neither female seemed particularly disturbed by the powder and we watched one of them go back to nursing their young. Finally, The babies were fine the next morning (see notes on captive animals for details). July 13 This am on GRID MC we dusted ♀#1200, nonbreeding, with GREEN powder, at station 8,7; and on GRID RC we dusted ♀#1979 at 7,16 with RED powder, caught ♂#1955 snout, with RED powder visible in his jaws (from ♀#1979) This afternoon on GRID MC we retrieved the collar that ♀#1186 lost in May. M. Stambach cut a triangular hole and cl found the collar ~30mm inside. The inner cavity (~20mm diameter) was filled with fresh moss & lichen, as with the other nests; but there was no obvious nest up
