Melanerpes formicivorus
Plague
Hastings Reservation
21 July
715. One bird flew to Plague from the bunkhouse a minute ago; otherwise all is calm and quiet.
720. 9157 drilling alone in telephone pole.
725. Now 9157 preening peacefully atop the 2nd tree.
735. 822 flew up to top of Plague; 9157 immediately flew in to greet him. A 3rd bird also flew here from the bunkhouse. The 8 and this 3rd bird then flew down to the sap area, where they greeted at least a 4th bird.
741. 822 back preening in Plague; again greeted by 9157.
745. 8ub flew up to Plague from bunkhouse and is now sitting next to 822. No antagonism between them, nor did they greet each other overtly.
800. No change. 888 still quietly atop Plague; others silently sapsucking. Leaving. My guess is that after a necessarily slow start due to birds sapsucking to fill up after the night that activity will again pick up and eventually get to a fairly high level in the afternoon.
Rocky reports relatively little activity here after I left, or on succeeding days
25 July
1550. Nothing here at the moment.
1600. A bird just flew up atop Plague, then to the sap area, where he greeted a 2nd bird at least.
1603. 822 just pulled same maneuvers as the above bird.
1606. At least 2 birds by the bunkhouse now.
1620. Going to take care of my bread.
1645. Back. 9157 hawking for several minutes before returning to sap area. Apparently 3 birds here.
