Melanerpes formicivorus
Plague
(18 April)
Hastings Reservation
seen involving #245 and the unringed ♂.
1208. ♀ 6 flew into Plague, threatened/displaced by juv ♀.
Things are noticeably quieter just in the last 10 minutes
(presumably since the adult ♀ returned)
1210. Some chasing continues, but most displaying is now
waka's among the 3 group birds.
1214. Several intruders around, including at least one ♂.
1220. Activity still relatively low. #245 still here. Chases
occurring conspicuously less frequently.
1228. Still one intruder around anyway, but things are
reasonably quiet.
1230. Off to Y for a stint.
1445. Things seem relatively quiet here too by now. A ♀
is in the telephone pole hole, but besides that
there are no other AW in evidence.
Correction: ♀157 is sitting quietly atop the 2° tree.
The bird in the ⚫ hole is no doubt ♀245.
The ♀ just came out of the hole, followed by the ♂.
Maybe they usually copulate in the nest hole after all.
With the set up in Plague, I caught 2 birds,
one an unringed ♀, now #262, at 1500, and ♀157 at 1540.
The latter was processed and released quickly. The former
had been in the net longer and was held overnight to
recover.
19 April
830. All 3 group birds are atop Plague; a 4th bird (unringed ♂)
is eating leaf/flower buds in 2° tree; a 5th bird is also
possibly in the area. Fair amount of waka'ing going on,
