1976 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes forficatus Plague Hastings Reservation (11 April) Throughout the time I was here. Birds were calling and flying around several more remote areas of the territory. I did not have my scope, however, so I left after 20 minutes or so. 1020. Unbanded picked catlein from top of Plague. Previously more chasing was taking place; possibly sexual inasmuch as QARLW was the chase! 1030. 9CB-w/yel drilling at acorn in main trunk of Plague. 8 still flying up to small twigs at top of Plague to get catleins. Perhaps not who he seems, as he occasionally kaas. 1035. An unbanded 8 is in tree 2; was seen checking out a small hole. This probably explains the kaas of the other birds; intruders are still here. 1039. Several birds flew to top of 2° tree and waka displays - 2 grappled together upon landing and fell a few feet to the ground. QARLW is here. 1040. I thought I'd seen this awhile back, but am sure now: atop the 2° tree were 298 (QARLW and 8ub); and 8ub. The unbanded 8 began peeking at 8wh, who assumed a submissive posture. The ub 8 proceeded to "mount" the resident and poke at her from her back until 8wh flew off. Meanwhile the 8 sat a foot above them unmoved. I will refrain from wild-eyed speculation concerning this one for awhile! [Previously (twice this morning, in fact) I'd seen 8wh in chases when she'd looked more pursued than pursuer. They apparently were real after all]. 9CB-w/yel still eating acorns along main trunk of Plague.
