Melanerpes formicivorus
Bianca
Hastings Reservation
(14 October) of red in the crown, but in good light she appeared to have
some black as well; thus my guess is that she's in the midst
of molting to a ♀-type. I could be wrong, however.
She's sitting in the Black Oaks perch tree by herself at the moment.
1605. Got a faint look over on the knoll of ♂♀ LB/Reddish-? #303,
presumably, with ♂ 214. That about wraps it up except for
♀ 213. I fear the 2, 6alories, 302 and 305, not seen after
banding, should finally be purged.

1130. Counted stores:
Old Tree: 299
Blue Oaks: 140
Main VO: 871
"New" area: 186
VO on knoll: 10

Not Gad; but definitely
could be better

1530. ♂♀ or/with #214 in Black Oak perch tree.
1530. Birds seem mostly to be working the knoll (Willow Oak) (Which I
can't see, of course).
1600. There are 3 birds up behind me now, one of whom may be being
chased.
1607. ♂♀ Yel-Or/la #141 up there.
1615. Flushed ♂140 from the knoll tree; a ♀ there also. Meanwhile, next
to me just above the chapparal was an unringed ♀ who was working in an
ash for several minutes and then flew over to LA2, where there eventually
were 5+ birds, several banded! Apparently the 2 LA2 birds, having
failed 2 years in a row, have given up the ghost and now, I suspect,
Bianca is taking it over.

See LA2 notes (p.6) for some late observations of Bianca birds
over there.
