1976 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Miss Bianca (21 March) indicated that she was most likely an intruder (from Black Oak?) The birds here were seen eating oak leaf buds and eating acorns. They do have considerable stores remaining (in the nest area only). 9 April 1145. Count: Old tree: 0 Blue Oak area: 18 Nest tree: 740 "New" area: 170 Knoll Valley Oak: 0 } 928 Several birds were around, but none was especially conspicuous. 19 April 1745. None seen in/out of holes in a brief pass. Some calling heard. 20 April 1610. A few birds in storage area; none identified for sure. 22 April 1130. Watching. 1140. There is an unwrung & here, but she is by herself and acting rather oddly*, indicating to me that she's most likely an intruder.* She hides at any disturbance; acting very nervous and furtive. 1148. Several birds around, but no real activity and they are hard to find. 1202. Wnt*140 plus 1-2 others in Valley Oak storage tree on knoll 1230. They over on the other side of the knoll, I guess. I'm going to check holes. 23 April 1335. None seen here in a pass at the holes. 28 April 1015. Watching 1025 ① 140 (① 142, 2 others landed near storage tree. 1050. Several birds around (25); no more identified yet.
