1976 Walter D. Bening 9 Melanerpes formicivorus Lower Arnold 2 Hastings Reservation 12 December 1100. Watching from hide. Nobody in evidence here at all yet. 1107. ☺♀ LB/DB-wr(cw) #213 hawking in Blue Oak grove now. 1112. ♀213 flew up and off across Arnold field toward Black Oak crossing paths with ☺♂ east-DB/M #133 who came from that direction and landed in the Blue Oak. 1135. ♂ still here; none else as yet. 1141. Both the above 2 birds back; greeted each other with good walks. 1200. Now I finally see ☺♀ LB/DB-1A #303 eating an acorn in the Valley Oak. The above 2 birds still around, primarily hawking. Just what I need - to have the 2nd yr bird - ♀213 not move over and instead to have the 1st yr ♀303 do so! 1210. Finally: ☺♀ mauve/yellow #215 in the Valley Oak. Things are relatively quite calm here. 1215. 3-4 of them all in the Blue Oak now. 1225. All 3 ♀s together in the Blue Oak. Briefly. It certainly looks as though this is the group - even the 1st yr. ♀. I see no evidence for a 5th or 6th bird, however. 1230. Leaving. Birds are still occasionally flying off to far parts of the Arnold (toward Black Oak, A1, UA2).
