1976 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Lower Arnold 2 Hastings Reservation 13 January 1452. ♀ L-Pink / Dark Eye #132 seen in large Valley Oak between LA2 and A1 nest tree ( LA2 → UA2 1457. ♂ / m, most likely #133, fl ew to save tree from old broken Valley Oak in the field between Al-Bianca: → 14 January (500. Down this direction in the Valley Oak on the Bianca side of their storage Al nest vicinity I saw 4-5 birds, all but 2 of which departed or were chased immediately toward the field between Black Oak, Bianca, Al, and here. 20 January 1330. A ♂ over in the forest edge by Al's old tree [♂] was apparently LA2 adult ♂ #133. 21 January 1350. 2 birds here; ♀ light / DPink seen (#132). I also checked the marked acorns, finding 21/25, none of which had been moved (but it's hard to check here in odd weeks, of course). 23 February 930. Counted stores: Blue Oak: 230 } Nest tree 217 } 447 There appear to be far fewer acorns stuck into the bark of the Blue Oak, thus the count may be somewhat more accurate than some of the previous ones. 21 March Saw 2 birds here and quite a few remaining stores. 9 April 1200. Count: Blue Oak: 186 } Nest tree: 274 } 460 Didn't see any woodpeckers here. 19 April 1730. 2 birds flushed from the vicinity; neither were identified. They were most likely not anyone unexpected.
