1976 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Upper Arnold 2 Hastings Reservation 26 September 1010. 1 bird flushed from the storage tree. Earlier, several A3 birds appeared to fly to or very near this territory when flushed from A3. 1330. No acorns stored here as yet. One bird flushed again, however, and several were more or less between here and the center of the field, where several A1 and LA2 birds were centered. At one point, a bird chased from near LA2 flew back up here and was apparently ♂ LB/DP#205, my good friend. 7 October 1330. No stores, no birds. 11 October A3 birds here. See A3 notes. This group is definitely defunct for the time being. 17 October 830. 2 birds flew to the "nest" tree while I was standing here; both flew off across the gulch and towards A3. No stores here; it is still an open territory, evidently. 1000. Sitting here when I returned by were ♂ub, ♀ ♂DB-wnj/M#121, and a 3rd bird, all no doubt flushed over to here when I left at A3. 18 October Changes: ♂205 and ♀128, both moved to Arnold 3 1 July ± 2 weeks. This territory & has at least temporarily been annexed by the "main" Arnold 3 group, and is no longer a separate entity. 28 October No birds; no stores. 6 November 1030. An ub♀ with an acorn in the nest tree; still no stores. Meanwhile, at the top edge of the territory are 2 birds, one ♂M/-, very possibly #204. 8 December 1415. No birds; no stores.
