Melanerpes formicivorus
Upper Arnold 2
Hastings Reservation
24 March 1150. 9128 in storage tree; at least 2 others in upper part near
the field, one of whom was 9207, a juv. from A3. It turned out
(9207)
that she was sap sucking up in the Blue Oaks just behind the
big live Oak between the territories, about midway twist the
2 storage trees.
9 April 1230. 9 was sitting in storage tree, presumably 128. A second
bird may have been in the tree also; I thought I
saw a 8 fly out independently from the 9.
19 April 8 RRR#205 (A3) seen here with a second bird (presumably
9128.) See A3 notes.
1930. 9 sitting in "nest" tree alone. I never got her bands
because she insisted on freezing with her tarsi covered
until I was right underneath her and turning away;
surely this was 9128 however, as that's exactly how she
acts. None else in the vicinity.
22 April 1320. 8 RRR#205 sitting alone atop the Valley Oak 'nest' tree here
again. Off hand I did not see the 9. Later 205 seen with
other A3 birds at A3 (see A3 notes).
23 April 1245. 9 - possibly unring and not 9128 - sitting alone in 20
(more or less unused) storage tree. Not a whole lot of
stores left. No other birds seen.
1255. While contemplating some small Blue Oak trees with
lots of AW sap holes in there, 9144 [left bands seen] #198
from Black Oak came cruising over my head and landed
in one of them. He stayed for 15 seconds to check me
out and then flew toward A3.
1300. Leaving.
