1976 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Arnold 3 (6 December) Hastings Reservation stored acorns in the limb facing the captive and is clearly the most interested, but is not getting enough support to feel she can attack, perhaps. 1135. 8204 is clearly interested as well [illegible] and, though he's not staying as close to the cage as is 8290, he is more aggressive, looks more upset, and is making an occasional pass at the cage 1150. Finally: 8290 landed on cage, pecking at the captive. 1200. 8290 still on cage. 8207 near by. Going to take the bird down. These birds were clearly not as aggressive as was Road 1 a couple weeks ago, but it is still the young birds who were most interested. In order: 8290 (1st yr) Most interested. On cage. 8204 (2nd yr) Next most. Looked more upset than others but did not attack 8207 (2nd yr) A distant 3rd 8289 (1st yr) Barely above the total disinterest of the few adults around. 8 December 1430. 8290 seen as I came to count stores. Counted stores: N fork 1850 ) M fork 1500 ) 4778 S fork 1428 ) Anyway you do this, it's rather a bitch, I'm afraid. But I tried! I also checked the 2° gravany by Lambert's but saw no stores - Also see LA2 notes - 8290 seen there also.
