1976 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Arnold 3 Hastings Reservation 6 December 1015. Watching from hide; captive being used as bait. 1025. ①♂ M / #204; ②♀ / #205; others just looking. Nobody in granary yet. 1028. Several loud karit-cuts given by captive. 1034. ②♀ M/ ①♀ #289 interested as captive in karit-cutting again, but still looking from a distance. 1037. There are at least 5 birds watching from the large V0 just up from the granary. No moves as yet. 1040. Yes. ③♀ Maudie / LP-Red (wing-streaker gone) #207 here among them. Also ④♂ Fuse / M #128 and ⑤♂ LBS / light #205. 1054. No change. 4-5 birds still watching; nobody in granary 1105. 4 birds (inc. #207, #289, ③♀ ~ / DBLue #290) came to granary, led by ♂204. But no closer than the far limb so far. 1108. Now - ♀290 one foot above the cage and watching; captive rather frantic. ♂204 still on other side of tree. 1110. ♀289 just returned, landing on the 3rd limb. 1112. Both 2nd yr birds: [illegible] ♂204 and ♀207 here also. 1116. ♀290 still just above cage. 1120. Greatest interest is clearly by the 1st and 2nd yr birds, but no one has made a clear move yet except ♀290, who sat above the cage on the tree for about 15 minutes before flying off. 1124. The 2 birds still in the granary are ♀290 and ♂204. ♀289 is now about a foot away from the cage again. ②1128. ♀290 is still very near cage. She is checking
