1976 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Arnold 3 Hastings Reservation (22 April) 1400 Pack is in storage tree; those I could see just sitting. When one flew off, all joined sofort; this time they flew to the sap area by UA2. A moderate amount of wake displaying accompanied the landing, but after a few seconds all was silent. 1407. 8 126, 9255, + 3 other 88 of 'pacle' in main storage tree. Birds all landed; 2 began to work stores while the others sat quietly looking around. After a minute, all 5 sat alert, all on the same limb within a [illegible] 2 feet of each other. At 1410 (2:45 after arriving), the pack took off, led by the 8, landing in the tree between the [illegible] 1st storage tree and the '75 nest hole. No vocalizations accompanied taking off or landing in this case. 1417. Pack in now in voost tree. 9255 seen going into hole; came out immediately, but soon after a 8 stuck his head out. Other birds sitting in tree. 1420. 8 RRR#205 here also now; at least a total of 7 birds involved. I'm going to check the hole. The pack flew off, again more or less led by the 8 (one bird flew off, but the 8 rest waited and only went 20 sec. later after the 8). Noone is in the hole now, but it certainly is a mice one. No doubt a nest is imminent, and plans should be made to open it very soon (=tomorrow). 27 April 1755. Walked by, first scaring several birds from the '75 nest tree and then flushing "the pack" of 7+ birds from the storage tree.
