1976 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Lambert Hastings Reservation 20 May 1700. Babies measured. Eyes not quite open yet. 23 May 1730. Noises still coming from hole. 8 June 1900. Banded and processed the kids, all 4 of whom are fine. They become #s 283 to 286. 14 June 1900. Nothing seen in a brief pass up here. 15 June 745. Watching from hide. [illegible] Moving farther into Lambert's land. 802. ① YRW #201 in view. 808. ② 3or/ Blue #202. ③ 3 LP/M #114 822. ④ LP / Dark? #116? possibly in view. 834. ⑤ j BP/DG-BP #285 crawling around the west tree near the nest hole. 900. Flushed ⑤ j M/Reb- #284 and, better yet, ⑥ 3rub when I went up the hill a ways. 915-1000. Interlude during which time I walked over to the 2 neighboring groups - one up further along the fence line and the other south toward the national forest. Both of the groups have lots of stored acorns, the 2nd in particular. Also during this time I saw ③ and ⑥ again in Lambert territory. When I get my portable hide I should watch the above groups to look for banded birds. 1007. ② 3or/DB in view. This bird still has some tail spots, by the way. 1045. Nobody else has shown himself.
