1976 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus KeepOut Hastings Reservation 10 May 1200. Bird in nest hole. 11 May 1930. The wicklers have hatched - good wicker-baby noises coming from hole, from which I flushed an adult. Also, amid all the excitement, I counted stores: 245. ✓ 13 May 1700. Marked and measured the babies, who are in there 4th day or so. All 3 are fine. 15 May 1930. Measured babies, whose eyes are just about ready to open; all feather tracts are solidly dark. 19 May 1845. Measured the kids, whose eyes are open and whose feathers are on their way. 23 May 1730. Noises still coming from hole. 27 May 1845. All 3 babies fine but not measured. 31 May 1415. Babies bled, banded, and measured. They are all in good shape, were given a dot of yellow on their foreheads, and are #273, 274, and 275. 3 June Several flights seen to the nest. ✓ 5 June A few stores remain here. Nest was quiet, but I suspect they're in there somewhere. 8 June 1620. Over in the sap tree usually used by Big Tree (right along the fence toward A3 about 40m from the gate) were 90r-y/or #109 and one of the babies, who have obviously fledged. Offhand I don't see anybody else, however. 14 June 1835. 90r/or - #109 and an adult ♂ in nest area. No babies heard. The ♀, although, bothered by me, flew to the Big Valley Oak over on Hastings, where she was shortly afterwards displaced by Pub, probably from Big Tree: [illegible] Here. KO - Fence Babies heard at 1845.
