1976 Walter D. Koenig 2 Melanerpes formicivorus KeepOut Hastings Reservation 23 April 1200. Lower hole in Live Oak opened. Nothing yet. 27 April 1915. ♂ looking out of hole again. 28 April 1150. Watching. 1202. Birds are sapsuckling in the area next to and south from the Live Oak nest tree ♂ OR-Y/Oris #109 here. 1205. ♂ at hole in Live Oak; sat 3 minutes before flying up to sap tree. 1215. (2) ♂ LG/LB #118 eating catkins in Blue Oak near sap tree. 1300. Chased an intruder from storage tree (both birds). 1305. Possibly a 3rd group member is here. 30 April 1045. Something is up either here, Big Tree, or in any case in the "Big Tree" sap area up along the fence. A fair amount of activity including Garricles seen. At Keep Out itself, ♀109 was seen along with ♂250 finally. Also when I drew up a bird was in the hole again. 1100. I have yet to get a good fix on any of the central characters, but as there are at least 3-4 of them and the area of greatest activity is between the Big Tree sap area and Big Tree itself, I assume that it is Big Tree that is primarily concerned. About this time I went over to open the nest here, and guess what - 3 eggs! They were all clear and warm, and were numbered 1-3. 2 May 1430. Nest checked. Same 3 eggs. 5 May 1745. Nest checked and eggs measured. 9 May 1110. Nest still being attended. (@to p.4)
