1976 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Big Tree Hastings Reservation 29 June 655. 8:04 thrashing a large, fuzzy, brown caterpillar back and forth. Pub here several minutes later. 7:10. Pub still here; 8:08 flew in. 7:16. An ub & probing in the tree below the & and & (?) 7:20. ub sitting comfortably 2 fl from 8:08; 7:25. Both these & still sitting (?) 7:30. Pub back. Pub finally started looking around him and, without being visibly displayed to, flew up and over to KeepOut, where I'm sure he doesn't belong either. 7:45. Leaving. A bird just 17:15-17:45. Watched, but only one bird & , came in view. He, however, was seen to eat an acorn in the perch tree, despite the fact that this group has "no" stores left (much like KeepOut this morning). 20:15. 32 birds in roost hole by the road. 10:10. 2 & over here. 10:13. A 3rd bird didn't even get a chance to land before getting displaced and flying over the fence line. 10:16. Pub alone in perch area now 10:25. The & having flown across the road, the perch tree has just had a banded juvenile land in it (coming from the spring, no doubt). 10:27. Jun. flew up to Lambert Group territory. Was not chased, but seconds later a & was back in the same tree. 10:35. 26 birds up above me in Top Field, but the light is inferior all over. I'm leaving. 11:15-11:30. Watched all 36 birds (28 & and 8 & ) together in 1 July
