1976 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus BigTree Hastings Reservation 20 January 930. ♂LG-Y/LG-Y seen at BigTree alone (#108). Later in the morning I checked the marked acorns here, finding 28/40, none of which had been moved. 21 January 1000. Watching from truck. ♂LG-Y/LG-Y #108 in perch trees. 1010. ♀♀ Red-LB/Red-LB #110 landed in rear storage tree. ♂♂ still out front. 1017. ♂♂ Or / Y-Or = Or-Brn / Or-Brn [?] #104 came to perch area, then flew across the road to TopTree. 1030. ♂♂ flew across road. None on this side now. 1030. 10BA Leaving. 26 January 1220. ♂ #108 seen in roost tree on BigTree side of road ( 16 February Purge: 21 January 76 9200 (juv.) last seen 22 Oct., gone by 22 Dec. 75+1 month. √ 17 February Count: 434 all in main tree. I saw ♀Red-LB/Red-LB #110 while here, plus several (at least 2) others were up with her in top field across the road. 23 February 1115. ♂ Yel #108 eating acorn at anvil near stores; also seen closing several flickers just behind the BigTree. √ 21 March Lots of stores remain 22 March 915. ♂Or-Brn/Or-Brn#104 is sap-sucking along the fenceline toward A3 (same area as last summer). Several other species are using sap also (Nuttall's Woodpecker, Downy Woodpecker) He is the only AW here, but I'd previously flushed several others by BigTree. 920. Both the AW and a ♂Downy have been sitting in separate parts of the sap-tree since 915 with no interspecific aggression between them.
